Wood oars for Real Men
Published: Friday, 27th June 2008
Over the years Collars have made oars for almost every type of craft, and used by Olympic winning teams to lobstermen pulling in their pots.
As far as oars go, they don't come much larger than the oars used by Thames Lightermen for Traditional Barge Driving.
With the main event of the year taking place on 5th July between Greenwich and Westminster, Collars were asked to supply the necessary oars two of the barges taking part. With a barge weighing in at around 30 tons the 2 oars at 25' in length steer and manoeuvre the barge in the current as has been done for the last 250 years. Run today by the charity Transport on Water, the tradition and skill is kept alive for all to see.
