Black staining is a mold that occurs when water gets under the varnish. Before it can be rectified the varnish surrounding the area needs to be removed and the wood left until dry. As sanding will not remove all the staining, Oxalic acid should be carefully used to help bleach the stained area, after which the wood can be washed off and left to dry. A light sand before applying some thinned varnish, after which the layers can be built up. The area will look paler but after a couple of months in the sun, the colour will blend in.
